Lory Park is a sanctuary and haven to a huge variety of Wildlife. We are situated in Midrand, Johannesburg , South Africa that was once a host to many indigenous Fauna and Flora. Over time the impact of man-made hazards on our environment, often through ignorance and a lack of understanding, has been the cause of numerous wildlife casualties. Curator Eddy van Eck began collecting various birds from the early age of 14. His interest began with Lories, Lorikeets and Cockatoos. By the mid '90's his collection of Lorikeets was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Traveling worldwide he built up a reputation with other breeders and became renowned for his breeding success rate. Being on the same latitude as many South American countries and with his ability to breed the impossible, a collection of CITES appendix I & II have joined the centre. After further enhancing his studies of numerous birds in their natural habitat, he realized that South Africa had no proper avian facilities whereby the general public and more importantly school children could attend and receive the necessary environmental education required. His mission - to open a park/zoo, where first and foremost children could be educated on the rehabilitation of the environment and secondly encounter a holistic learning experience. Since opening the park, it has turned into a fully fledged educational facility, as a result of additional animals.
The Lory Park gardens are now well established and user friendly.
10 Acres of well designed enclosures with spacious walkways. Eddy and Matty reaping the rewards after many years of animal dedication.
And this is what it is all about.... A state-of-the-art animal care facility.
